Description
A dynamic composition centered on a beautiful, strong woman pulling mightily on a tow rope, pulling a boat in, on the beach. There are several other subsidiary figures, boys, men, horse, also laboring to pull the boat in. The sky is a complex of clouds and color, and the overall look is of a world of light and hard effort. In one version, the boat is fully in the picture, though in another version, it is mostly truncated and thus hard to make out. The female figure is clearly central, and is visually even more prominent because her baroque flowing clothes almost melds into the baroque clouds beyond, making her almost cosmic in visual character.

Emotional Sum or Sense-of-life
There is great effort in life, and a woman can be the master of it. This painting is a curious combination of romantic heroism and 19th century genre naturalism. It has a visual dynamism and dramatic content that is strongly romantic, yet the subject is the prosaic task of pulling a boat out of the water.
